Hamersley Iron, a member of the Rio Tinto Group cites its world-class railway system as a fundamental element in its success, as part of the integrated infrastructure that is key to the organisation’s operational efficiency. Standard ore trains consist of over 200 cars (wagons), each with a load capacity of 105 tonnes. The hydraulic arm assembly on the car dumper is required to pull the train along the track until the front two cars enter the car dumper, representing a significant load, since a fully laden train (some 2.3 km long), weighs more than 24,000 tonnes. The hydraulic arm was severely fatigued as a result of age and heavy usage and had to be replaced.
